This morning I had to make a decision.
Go left, and take old Highway 2 with less traffic but further distance, or go right and head back to the main four-lane Highway 2.
I went right, which led me to talking to the Boy Scouts, who were having a campout in the Scoutmaster’s backyard. The Scoutmaster’s wife, aka assistant Scoutmaster, found me on Main Street, Stanley, North Dakota.(Which, by the way is a nice, cute little town. Like Mayberry. Everything is on Main Street. If it isn’t on Main, they don’t have it.)
The Assistant Scoutmaster made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.
“We’ll make you breakfast if you come talk to the Boy Scouts,” she said.
“What are ya having?” I asked.
“Instant oatmeal. Three different flavors to choose from,” she replied.
I was sold.
The scouts and I had a lengthy discussion about the first 10 amendments to the Bill of Rights, and the scouts were able to check off a requirement in their quest to get their first class rating.
The couple’s 16-year-old son Micah was very outspoken. Passionate and motivated about the government, Micah was also very conservative.
He began to sing God Bless America, and slowly we all joined in. Then Micah left with me, pushed the cart for a few blocks until he had to leave to walk to church.
I was glad I went right instead of left.
