Heading into Leavenworth Thursday night, I realized I had lost my Air Force flag somewhere between mile marker 96 and 100. By the way, I reached 100 miles yesterday! I spent Thursday night at the Leavenworth Fire Station and am so thankful for their hospitality, shower, dinner and bed.
When firefighter Gil, who served in the Air Force, heard about the missing flag, he backtracked on the highway to try to find it. I took off and continued walking east this morning, destination Wenatchee. I was walking facing traffic around mile marker 104 when I spotted the flag on my side of the road, 8 miles beyond where I most likely lost it!
What are the chances of that? How did it get there? I have no idea. I would classify it a miracle.
It was missing about a foot of wooden dowel and the wooden tip, but the flag was intact.
It probably hitched a ride on someone’s grill! Wow.
Today, Friday, April 5, I made it to Wenatchee, where relatives of a young Marine from Ronan are taking me in for the night.
Again I am so grateful for the generosity of strangers who understand the sacrifice our troops make every day.
Thank you.
